SEPA Presents:

Gerard Hall, CPP  “The Payroll Guy, LLC”

W-4’s

It’s been three years since the new W-4…everyone understands it now, right?! WRONG! Employees are still claiming that payroll costs them thousands on their tax return and employers are left with providing the basic answer of "you need to consult your tax advisor". But...do you even understand how the W-4 is calculated? If not, join Gerard Hall, CPP, as he discusses the reasoning behind the W-4 change, the mechanics of the calculations, and what you can and cannot say to an employee questioning how to complete the W-4. Oh, and of course’ we're going to do some real-life examples, so bring your calculator.

Gerard Hall, CPP, is the senior Payroll Operations Manager for the Human Capital Management division of CBIZ in Roanoke, Va., and has more than 15 years of on-the-ground experience in working with payroll and benefits. With the American Payroll Association, he serves on the Volunteer Hotline, the Board of Contributing Writers, the Education Grant Committee, and the Social Networking Committee.

He is the Registration Committee Chair for the Virginia Statewide Payroll Conference and is an active member of the Southwest Va. APA Chapter.

Separate from CBIZ, Gerard established “That Payroll Guy, LLC”  to focus on educating people on the intricacies of payroll as well as keeping those within the industry of relevant regulatory updates and changes.

We will be using a ZOOM Platform for their presentation, as we get closer to the meeting date, we will provide invites/links to attend the meeting virtually

Proposed “COVID” Amendment to the By-Laws

It has been brought to our attention that the SEPA Board Members have not followed all of the Chapter by-laws since the start of COVID.  For example, our President, Patrick Luddy, accepted a third term as president due to the fact that we could not find any volunteers (which we attribute to the lack of onsite meetings).  We would like to add a “COVID Amendment” to the by-laws.

This Amendment Vote will take place at our February 7th,2023 Meeting.  If you cannot attend the meeting members can email their vote, ‘Yay’ or ‘Nay’ to vicepresident@SEPAAPA.ORG

“COVID Amendment”

During times of national or local unprecedented events such as natural disasters, global/national heath pandemics, environmental issues, wars and other unforeseen events, it’s up to the current Chapter Board Members to follow the current  by-laws to the best of their abilities but it’s understood they may not follow all the by-laws as long as their decisions are made with and for the best interest of the Chapter.  This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Longer terms for board positions, not to exceed 3 consecutive terms
  • Elections for board members are not required if the member is running unopposed
  • There is no set number of chapter and board meetings per year
  • The collection of member fees may be delayed or canceled
  • Any other decisions that are viewed as in the best interest of the chapter.
