Important Department of Labor Changes
William Muller
- The subject of the presentation will be an overview of the new DOL Conflict of Interest Rule which was passed on April 6, 2016. The new rule goes into effect on April 2017
- The rule, which broadens the definition of fiduciary advice on qualified retirement accounts, including workplace retirement plans and IRAs, represents one of the most impactful developments since the establishment of ERISA in 1974.
- The new DOL Rule is important because it expands the types of retirement plans subject to fiduciary rules.
- Most significantly, the DOL’s fiduciary rules now cover IRAs, directly affecting participants who receive advice about IRA rollovers from their plans.
- Under the new rules, a fiduciary is any individual who receives compensation for providing advice that is individualized or specifically directed to a particular plan sponsor (e.g., an employer with a retirement plan), plan participant, or IRA owner and intended to help him or her make a retirement investment decision.
It is important for payroll providers who also provide 403b, 401k, or ERISA retirement plan services to be aware of the new rule and to be certain the advisors they work with on the plan are in compliance.
Officer Nominations
Election time is right around the corner and the SEPA Chapter will be voting for the positions of President and Treasurer!
Check out the position descriptions on the About Us/Officers page of our website and consider nominating a fellow payroll professional or nominate yourself for one of these crucial roles. A healthy organization like ours need the support and participation of an active membership to thrive.
Please note: The office of Vice President is not up for election this year, as previously communicated in error.
The dinner menu will be “The Farmer’s Delight.” A selection of seasonal soup, farm greens, oven roasted chicken, pasta primavera, seasonal vegetables and cheesecake. If you have special dietary needs, please contact Kelly Jo at vicepresident@sepaapa.org.
Please remember that if your membership is due for renewal, you must first renew your membership online before you will be able to register at the member rate. Membership renewal is located in the Membership section of the SEPA website.
Registration for this event will close as of August 15, 2016 or earlier if registration reaches room capacity. Walk-ins cannot be guaranteed a seat and will only be allowed into the event at the chapter's discretion based on available accommodations.
Community Outreach
It's back to school time and we will be collecting school supplies for donation to one of our worthy local charities! Please bring tablets, pens, pencils, erasers and anything else you can think of that young people will need to help them in their learning experience. Book bags are always in demand at this time of year, and you can find some great prices at the back-to-school sales!
Thank you for your support!
